Full disclosure: one of my stories is featured in this book, so I'm inclined to like it! Having said that, I don't think that it would be out of place for me to admire what this anthology does, and praise it for a great collection of historical fiction and poetry. Unlike speculative and literary fiction, historical writing is not showcased enough in journals and magazines, and this anthology is refreshing in its ambition and scope. A glance at this collection shows you just how many worlds historical fiction can open up as a genre, from Plantagenet England to Ancient Greece to 20th Century Mexico. The fiction and poetry are well-balanced, and all is packaged with a beautiful cover. Highlights for me include the poem "Ah, Devon Unbowed" by Tom Sheehan, evoking a coastal England that is close to my heart, and "A Lucky Boy" by Sarah Evans, which reminded me of Dickens in its touching portrayal of a boy missing his family.

Some pretty good stories in this collection. Most of the stories were not to my usual taste. I gave the four stars based on the stories that were in line with my usual reading. A good book if you enjoy non science fiction historical fiction.
