How to Be a Courageous Girl of God: An Interactive Journal Inspired by Extraordinary Women of Faith is a vividly colored, spiral-bound, interactive journal for girls ages 8 and above. It is a spiral journal which makes it easier to open flat for writing and artwork. The inside pages are thicker than normal to allow the use of pens and other types that might otherwise bleed through the page. The cover is a thin type of paperboard that actually is a bit than the pages. It is not very sturdy. Women featured are women of faith from the Bible. Some are better known than others, including Mary, Elizabeth, Deborah, and many more. Each section includes a description of who she was, a scripture to locate her in the Bible, and an illustration of what she might have looked like. Girls will especially enjoy that. In the journal sections readers may draw their own illustration from the story, write why they think the woman was courageous, post how they can also be courageous, also, ending with a page that has scripture and space to write a journal entry of whatever they wish. This is a lovely journal for young ladies. It would be a nice standalone journal or awesome companion to Barbour’s 100 Extraordinary Stories for Courageous Girls and The Bible for Courageous Girls. I highly recommend it for girls ages 8 to 12. Some older girls might like it, too. It would be great for a small group, class, or gift to get a girl interested in journaling or learning about a Women of the Bible. It gets a 4.5 out of 5 star rating from me. Combining inspirational Bible stories with plenty of space for writing and drawing, the journal aims to empower girls to live courageously. Over a span of five pages for each woman, the journal directs the user to read the Bible story, examine why this woman was considered courageous, and contemplate a life application. In my opinion, some of the stories in How to be a Courageous Girl of God were stretched. Regarding Noah's wife, the text says that “she must have shared Noah's strong faith and trust in God.” While it is likely that she did, we really don't know as it's not addressed in the Bible. For Priscilla, the narrative says that she and her husband spent time with Paul, “making tents and talking about the Bible.” This choice of wording is a bit misleading. While they had the Torah and other sacred texts in the early church, they didn't have what we know of as “the Bible.” Maybe these things seem nit-picky, but they didn't settle well for me. The How to be a Courageous Girl of God journal is spiral bound with a cover that is slightly thicker than a normal paperback cover. Just from the mailing, three of the four corners have damage and the spine has substantial creasing. Considering that my daughter will likely use this for an extended time period, I think a hardcover would have been a better option. Despite the things listed here that I did not like, I'm pretty sure my daughter will be happy when I present the How to be a Courageous Girl of God journal to her. At seven, she's developed a love of journaling and likely would understand the concepts, but I'm not sure she's ready for critical thinking and life application yet. Late elementary to high schoolers will probably benefit most from this journal. This new book from Barbour Publishing is a great way to interest the young girls in your life into learning more about the brave women of the Bible. There is a brief description of each of the thirty-four subjects and the Bible scripture that offers them the complete story; a page where they can draw their interpretation of the story; a journal page to express their thoughts about the featured person; and finally, another page to write how they themselves can be a courageous girl also. I like that this spiral bound book allows it to be easily written in and I appreciate that the girls and women mentioned are from both the Old and New Testament. I am also glad that there is a Bible verse at the end of each section to offer further encouragement for these young readers who long to be a courageous girl of God. I recommend How to Be a Courageous Girl of God and I just wish that books like this had been available when my daughter was a young girl! Being spiral-bound helps the reader and writer be able to lay the journal open flat making it easier to write in, and the colors used are attractive for young girls. The paper used is fairly think so ink shouldn't blend through the paper to the other side, but the front cover I feel could have been improved upon. It is made from thin paperboard and sticks out over the inside pages, causing it to be easily bent (and it actually arrived through the mail bent already) and it won't hold up to repeated usage. It would have been better made from hardback material, and not as overlapping of the inside pages, although the colorful cover is eye-catching and pretty and will capture young girls' attention. I was very excited to win this lovely book. I gave it to my niece who will be reading it and hopefully enjoying the stories and pages to do drawings and answer questions. It is very nicely laid out - colorful, nice illustrations and great stories. The only comment I have is that maybe it would have been nice to have more of an explanation of the bible story for those young girls who don't easily look up stories in their own bible.

How to be a Courageous Girl of God is a great resource to use along with sharing your own journey with your child to help them cultivate their own relationship with God. A beautiful interactive journal. I love the women represented as well as bible scripture as a starting point for journaling. Across disciplines - after the young girl has journaled she can illustrate. Essentially she is writing her own book which will surely become a keepsake. I admire those who choose to give a hand up and inspire the next generation. I have just the girl in mind for this lovely book along with some colored pencils to get her started.
