The kindhearted spirit of Mr. Rogers is much needed in our world...whether in movie form or in this middle grade biography. I am glad Penguin dedicated one of their “Who Was?” books to him. He is well-deserving of it! May kids who read this feel encouraged and appreciated just knowing a little more about his life.

I love the subject - who doesn't love Mr. Rogers? - and think including him in the Who Was series is worthwhile. However, the writing is not very good. It's awkward, with several sections lacking a natural flow. The author jumps from event to event, ignoring chronology. I enjoyed the information that was presented, but the way it is presented needs work. And since I base my ratings on the writing and not my love for the subject...3 stars is the best I'm willing to go, especially since I've read I love the subject - who doesn't love Mr. Rogers? - and think including him in the Who Was series is worthwhile. I have really enjoyed learning more about Fred Rogers lately. I loved watching Mister Roger's Neighborhood when I was a child, and recently watched the new movie with Tom Hanks as well as the documentary, Won't You Be My Neighbor? He is seriously one of the best men I have ever learned/read about. I have never heard one unkind thing about him.

I watched Mr. Rogers as a small child but I don’t really remember the show or the person. It was interesting to learn about his life and how he was an advocate for kindness and social justice.
