It was a bit of a change from the usual heavy focus on the suspense that Ms. Rose does but I liked that we got to see so much of these characters all while still getting that mystery aspect. There was a lot going on in this book and it all came together really well. Dani and Diesel had so much to work out, we had a mystery trying to be unraveled, the killer's thoughts thrown in giving clues that will keep you guessing. And it all worked so well together and added to the intrigue that had me loving this book. This was actually my first book in the Cincinnati series but I could follow along with all of the side characters without issue and now I can't wait to go back and read their own stories. I do think it would be better to read the series in order so that you get a better understanding of the characters, but it's not necessary. ARC kindly provided in exchange for an honest review.

Dani and Diesel - I've been waiting for this one for a long time and Karen Rose did not disappoint. No one and I mean no one can craft a thriller like Karen Rose. Layers upon layers and lots of bodies make a maze of a tale and at the heart are two innocent children who Diesel and Danni have to protect. We get a round up of all the Cincinnati Series characters and It was great to see them in action along with Dani and Diesel. I suspect that this may be the last Cincinnati Series book and it was Dani and Diesel - I've been waiting for this one for a long time and Karen Rose did not disappoint. We get a round up of all the Cincinnati Series characters and It was great to see them in action along with Dani and Diesel. I suspect that this may be the last Cincinnati Series book and it was fantastic. Dr. Dani Novak told Diesel Kennedy to find someone else 18 months ago. He didn't. She has some serious baggage and was afraid of the depth of the feelings that Diesel awoke in her. Diesel has some heavy baggage of his own, but one look at Dani and he was willing to conquer his past for a future with her - someday. He's a patient guy. It takes two children in need of both Dani and Diesel for these two to get over themselves and realize that they belong together. When five year old Joshua Rowland's mother is late picking him up from Coach Diesel's soccer practice, he is concerned. When his fourteen year old brother, Michael runs up to get him, Diesel can tell that Michael is injured. The tale the boys final tell is chilling and starts the unraveling of a vigilante plot that has caused the death of some very deserving people, but now has Michael as an innocent target.

His stepfather was a pedophile and abused Michael, so I wasn’t too broken up over his death. My heart truly went out to Michael growing up with a neglectful, selfish mother. She didn’t even bother to learn sign language even though Michael was deaf from birth. On top of all that, she marries an abusive asshole leaving her kids vulnerable! When the police start to investigate the murder, the killer realizes he may have left a witness, so Michael and his five year-old-brother are in danger. That’s when Joshua’s soccer coach, Diesel, gets involved. Diesel is a coach in his free time to give back to the community and help kids out, but he’s mainly a hacker for The Ledger, an investigative news/website. When Diesel realizes Michael is injured and these kids may be victims of neglect or worse, he takes them to Dr. Dani Novak, not only because Dani’s is partially deaf and fluent in sign language, but because she’s the most compassionate and kind doctor he knows. His heart aches every time he lays eyes on her, because she has made it clear a relationship is off the table. Diesel knows there’s a mutual attraction, though so he’s not sure what’s holding Dani back. Diesel and Dani’s attraction can’t be ignored when they’re thrown together to look after Michael and Joshua when they have no place to go. However, they’ll have to deal with their feelings in between dodging a killer bent on eliminating Michael. I found that the romance drama was low, because Dani and Diesel didn’t have time to wishy washy back and forth, they had to just get their shit sorted and concentrate on not dying, lol! Dani might have tried my patience otherwise. There are a few reasons she’d held back, reasons she felt were valid, but any outsider could’ve told her they were BS. There were a lot of heartbreaking moments here since Michael was the victim of abuse. Diesel has his own story to tell, and he helped Michael deal with the feelings of guilt, shame and anger. Despite Into the Dark being over six hundred pages long, I felt like I breezed through the story pretty quickly. Lots of action and danger, they kept me turning the pages, and I cared about what happened to Dani, Diesel, Michael and Joshua! I switched back and forth from e-book to audio and I'm happy I did that because I didn't want to put the book down when I had to get real-life stuff done. Hillary Huber did an excellent job with both the male and female voices. A copy was kindly provided by Berkley in exchange for an honest review.

We've been waiting a while for Dani and Diesel's story, and we finally have it, in Into the Dark - the 23rd in Karen Rose's romantic suspense series. I'll start by saying that all of KR's books are fantastic and it would be very unlikely for me to give them anything other than 5 stars. Dani is a doctor. She's part of the family KR has built in her universe, that includes Police, FBI, Therapists, Reporters, Volunteers - basically all good people with open hearts and selfless personalities. Diesel We've been waiting a while for Dani and Diesel's story, and we finally have it, in Into the Dark - the 23rd in Karen Rose's romantic suspense series. She's part of the family KR has built in her universe, that includes Police, FBI, Therapists, Reporters, Volunteers - basically all good people with open hearts and selfless personalities. Diesel is a hacker that works for a newspaper, again part of this massive family we have come to know and love. Diesel has loved Dani from the moment he set eyes on her 18 months ago, in her free clinic helping disadvantaged and under privileged people who need her help. But she has always pushed him away and told him that they can't be together. Dani has her reasons for rejecting Diesel, which we find out more about in this book. We learn more about her positive HIV status, her upbringing, her deafness and her previous heartbreaking romance with Adrian. Of course the Dani/Diesel romance is only half of the story, and we have murder galore in this instalment. Michael witnesses his step father's murder and must therefore go into protective custody in order to save himself and his younger brother Joshua. Michael is deaf and Joshua is only 5 years old, so to say they are vulnerable is an understatement. The killer is trying to tie up loose ends, so Michael won't be safe until he is caught. There are other strands that run alongside these two main stories - such as Grant Masterson and his missing siblings. It all ties up nicely in the end though. I read this one really quickly, and these are big books! :) KR doesn't scrimp on word count, but I believe she makes every one count and doesn't 'waffle'. We have got the steamy sex scenes that we are promised, the gory murders that we have come looking for and we also have the warm family dynamics that we have come to know and love about her universe. The old favourites, such as Marcus, Stone, Scarlett, Deacon and Adam are all back and quite visible in this story. Every one is needed to help with this case and everyone has their part to play. I would recommend this to any KR fans, but also anyone who wants a fast paced thriller to get lost in. Thanks to NetGalley for an ARC of this book. www.thebeautifulbookbreak.com

4.5 stars rounded up I loved this book! And I was really wanting a good one. This one made me remember why I started reading Ms. Rose. There was a little too much parading all the past characters which is a pet peeve of mine. A lot of them didn't really add to the plot and felt like filler. The plot itself was really good...although a sad and difficult subject. Ms. Rose did not exploit but did show how damaging sexual abuse is. Into the Dark by Karen Rose is a Suspense Romance Thriller, Book #5 of the Cincinnati Romantic Suspense Series, that moves fast and will keep you on your toes and turning those pages. This is a part of a series that I have not personally have read before, but I enjoyed this just as amazingly as Karen Rose’s fans and dedicated readers. I love the action filled scenarios that make for a very suspenseful story line and creative plot that keeps the book moving in a very exciting way. The characters in this story are amazing and the subject matter will grip you and immerse you into the story. I loved the main character, Dr. Dani Novak, who I understand from the author’s notes has a rare genetic disorder called Waardenburg syndrome, which affects hearing the most, besides the other pigmentation issues in the skin, hair and eyes. It opened my understanding of people and families who have to navigate language and speech using sign language and other ways of communication. The book begins with a highly emotional scene where Michael Rowland, a deaf child, is rescuing his 5-year-old brother, Joshua from being abused by his step-father – running away as fast as he could, while also witnessing a murder – which puts Michael’s life on the line. Michael’s coach, Diesel Kennedy, brings the injured Michael to Dr. Dani Novak, who will treat Michael. She is also deaf in one ear, and is able communicate with Michael using sign language. I am in awe of Karen Rose, as her books are so well written with amazing characters, an intense story line, a subplot with romance and of course the murder mystery thriller with the amazing twists that make for a highly entertaining read. I am a fan and will definitely be going back to read the rest of this exciting series that is emotionally charged and highly addicting read.

Into the Dark is the fifth instalment in the Cincinnati series and is the most gripping and absorbing so far. There is no problem with jumping into the series in this book although you will probably not want to miss the preceding book as this is romantic suspense at its best. The plot follows two brothers, Michael and Joseph, who happen to be there to witness a man being bundled into the boot of a car never to be seen again; they then find themselves in grave danger by the very same person as they have seen the face of a dangerous vigilante who does not intend to be disturbed from his disturbing "duty". Away from the primary plotline, the developing will they-won't they relationship between Diesel Kennedy and our feisty heroine Dr Dani Novak continues. Following a criminal carrying out his own system of vigilante justice, we see just how warped different people viewing the exact same event can become. This is a complex and fantastic thriller and the way in which Ms Rose takes various different but interlinked plot threads and weaves them all together into a patchwork quilt that is not only easy to follow and understand but utterly gripping too, is amazing. It has been done so exceptionally that I was astounded. This sprawling intricate, interconnected web makes for a multidimensional story and one with plenty of pep and pizazz and a superb balance between the main case and the personal lives of Dani and Diesel as well as the rest of the cast. I would say that this is up there with the authors most absorbing, accomplished and entertaining books to date, if not the most outstanding by far and my favourite for it's grit, thrills, twisty surprises and moral dilemmas. It is bound to be a huge hit with ardent long-term fans and newcomers alike. Highly recommended. Many thanks to Headline for an ARC.

I really love Karen Rose’s books, i have every single one up to date and now I’m currently waiting for the next one again!! I’ve waited a while for Dani and Diesels story and boy was it worth it. Dani and Diesels relationship, chemistry and there romance and i loved how personal they got. i found the story very emotional and have to say it really tugged and pulled at my heart strings. I loved Michael and Joshua’s characters throughout but my favourite definitely has to be diesel, i mean big, tattooed, bald and badass whats not to love but i love how his character shined throughout the story, i found him caring and really lovable and again BADASS. Dani is another great character and i loved her in the previous books aswell but i was so happy to get her story. one of the thing i love about Karen Rose’s books is the POV’s, in this story you get multiple point of views, you get Dani’s, Diesel’s, the killers and Michael and normally would confuse me normally but with Karen’s books I’m always find it easy to follow them. The murders through this are really compelling and made more suspenseful, they are many twists and turns to keep you on the edge of your seat, i really enjoy Karen Rose’s writing and enjoy the more suspenseful side in her books as much as i love the romance in her books. This book started off a binge read, even though i have already read the previous stories in the series after reading this i went back and read them again in the space of 4 days including re-reading this one. This book can be read as a standalone as is easy to follow the other characters in this book that have already had there story told, its easy to pick up and learn about their characters in this but since i also love the other books and characters i prefer and would recommend to read them in order. Karen Rose is one of my favourite Romantic Suspense authors and I know with every book of hers that I start that I will love it and this one was exactly the same.

This series includes many characters from different professions but all the professions are aimed at helping others and all of the protagonists are about exposing the truth, no matter how ugly. This book features two characters, Diesel Kennedy and Dani Novak, who are both drawn to each other but Dani has been resisting the attraction. She has been successful at keeping Diesel at arm’s length for quite some time but after the events that take place in this book, well, let’s just say that Dani will start singing a different tune. Diesel is a man who has been living on borrowed time and he knows it. To that end, he has committed to making a difference as long as he is able and coaching a youth league is just one of the many ways he gives back. It was in his capacity as a coach that he made a startling discovery that would bring him and those around him into the lives of two boys who desperately need advocates. There was only one person that Diesel could think of who would be beneficial in the situation he had been placed in and that was Dani. Together they would encounter many horrible truths, wrestle difficult decisions, and learn a few important lessons that would open their eyes and their hearts along the way. The opening of Into the Dark was just heartbreaking and learning everything that Michael went through was very upsetting, to say the least. I immediately loved Diesel because of his protective instincts as well as his vulnerability. Everything that was taking place took him to a very dark place but he stayed the course. Dani was an amazing advocate in this story and I liked that she was an HIV positive character who still lived her life to the fullest that she could. What took place between her and Diesel was a slow building romance that was very swoony. I loved, loved, loved, the fast-paced action and mystery that unfurled in Into the Dark because it kept me on the edge of my seat! This is a story and series that I absolutely would highly recommend to those who love to read a good thriller. This review is based on a complimentary book I received from NetGalley. It is an honest and voluntary review. The complimentary receipt of it in no way affected my review or rating.

When it comes to romantic suspense this author is definitely in my top five so I always know that I'm going to get a well written story with a twisting plot that keeps me holding my breath. This particular book not only has a vigilante killer who is almost like the Angel of death but also the romance that regular readers have been waiting for because it's Dani and Diesel ! It all begins with a teenage boy struggling to save his brother from their brutal, sadistic stepfather. Michael sees a murder take place but who would believe him ? He's deaf, he's a bit of a loner and his mother who should protect him just doesn't care about anyone but herself. So when Michael meets his brothers football coach Diesel he has no idea that he's finally found the one person who not only believes him but understands everything Michael has gone through. Diesel knows the only woman for him is Dani but the hiv positive doctor just keeps pushing him away. Things come crashing to a head though when Diesel needs Dani to help him communicate with the damaged and very scared Michael. Dani cannot conceive how anyone could hurt either of the two adorable brothers and agrees to temporarily foster them whilst the police investigate the murder but none of them have any idea just how many the killer has targeted and in his twisted mind he sees Michael as his newest target ! This series always takes me aback with the sheer horror and depravity that the author imbues it with. The idea of trafficking and paedophilia isn't new but the twist with not just one murderer but actually two certainly took me on a journey. There is a character briefly introduced at the beginning who actually is much more involved in the conclusion to this story than I realised. I did enjoy that because I was constantly trying to work out connections and then bam just before the end it all made horrible and tragic sense. Sadly as much as I enjoy catching up with old favourite characters I did occasionally feel there were just too many here to sort out and trying to remember what had happened previously took me out of the story at times. Plus I didn't actually like Dani as much here as I didn't completely buy her reasoning. She had so much angst and worry about her brothers in previous stories and yet this time softened completely with Diesel so her no no we can't quickly became oh ok then and I was just bewildered by her. Still I did enjoy this book and hadn't completely guessed the reveal about the missing persons so I do recommend reading this as it's obviously setting up for different characters to get their happy ending. This voluntary take is of a copy I requested from Netgalley and my thoughts and comments are honest and I believe e

And to see her reciprocate was a beautiful thing. Together these two are downright delightful even with all their personal baggage. They are captivating and interesting characters without a doubt. This story held some heartbreaking triggers. When children are involved, crime always seems doubly horrifying. And Michael and his little brother were such marvels. One deaf and the other dependent on his older brother. Their circumstances shredded my heart and their journey to safety enthralling for every single minute. As always, there's a generous catch-up with previous characters who make up the "team" of family, friends and work connections. Karen Rose builds the tension, horror and crime solving with unwavering strength and detail. She's not to be outdone in this area of writing skills. Another great read -- I feel a little squeamish about the 4-star rating. It may have something to do with the one I read just prior to INTO THE DARK. This go-round was fab, but not as fabulous! There was what felt like some overlapping and repetition in this one.

4.5 stars. A Karen Rose book is always a riveting read and this one held me all the way. A totally mad killer and Diesel, Michael and Joshua dealing with so much. And Dr. Dani and family. What a group. Loved catching up with them all. Love the Cincinnati gang.

Karen Rose never disappoints! Although 95% of my “reading” is done through audio books these days, I jumped at the chance to get an ARC of Rose’s newest title. For those who are longtime readers, the supporting cast of characters found within are old friends and it was definitely good to see them. Although the plot features a vigilante intent on punishing people he thinks deserve it, time is also spent on the issues of child sexual abuse and living with HIV. For those who are longtime readers, the supporting cast of characters found within are old friends and it was definitely good to see them. Although the plot features a vigilante intent on punishing people he thinks deserve it, time is also spent on the issues of child sexual abuse and living with HIV. We find out more about our heroine, Dani Novak - a supporting character in previous books set in the Cincinnati series, and why she’s been so reluctant to let our hero, Diesel Kennedy, in. These two have danced around each other in previous books, where we’ve gotten hints of some of the issues and trauma that each has had to deal one issues are brought into the light of day as they team up to care for and protect two brothers from both an abusive home environment and a murderer. The story is as engaging as all of Rose’s books, with a variety of twists and turns throughout. Even when you think you’re getting a clear picture, something comes along to shake things up. All in all, I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The storyline was compelling, although there should be trigger warnings for the child and sexual abuse, the love story was satisfying, and it was good to catch up on old friends. As always, I highly recommend this title by Karen Rose and equally recommend all of her others.

Wow. Just......wow. Cincinnati book 5 and the one we've all been waiting for. Yes we finally get Dani and Diesels story. And what a story it is! It's raw, horrific, real, heart breaking but also warm and compassionate. I had to stop reading a few times as I was in floods of tears. Having never read a book by this author, initially I found it a tough going. Soon the story emerged and I found myself right in the middle of the plot. A witness to a kidnapping and probably murder Michael, while protecting his brother Joshua, the two turned to Dani a doctor and Diesel a hacker for help and protection. Soon murders occurred and the duo started investigating. Karen Rose is a proficient writer whose play of words soon caught my interest. This book was part of a series, and I knew nobody, hence I concentrated solely on the murders. Dani and Diesel were highly complexed characters. It was nice to see Diesel accept Dani even with her medical situation. I enjoyed their conversations as baggage of the past was soon unloaded. The murders were compelling, made more suspenseful, thanks to the style of writing. Twists and turns and trying to outrun the murderer made it a fast read. I soon realized that even though this book worked as a standalone in its murders, I needed to go back and get to the others in the series in order to love the characters. A murder mystery made more interesting due to the characterization of the witness and the style of writing, I would call it an afternoon well spent. A fun romantic suspense.

Having few hours to kill I have walked in to Barnes and Nobles in Westbury. Strolling around the shelves full of books, I have chosen few books and found a quiet corner to read. This book was on a pile next to me. This author has been highly recommended to me by my bookstagram friends and... I was not disappointed. I loved every second of this book. I was intrigued, shocked, addicted... It was good.... No, absolutely engrossing. Why 4 stars then? Well, that a different story. Exactly. Firstly,DON'Tlet the size of this book put you off. If you don't like chunky books, this is genuinely one of those novels where you get to the last page and say 'Aww...it's over...'. If you don't like chunky books, this is genuinely one of those novels where you get to the last page and say 'Aww...it's over...'. It genuinely flies. Secondly. DON'T let the fact it's book 5 in the series bother you, genuinely you will want to read Books 1-4 after finishing 'Into The Dark', that is guarenteed, but you don't need prior knowledge to be reading the fifth in the Cincinatti series. Thirdly, and most importantly, this book is a stone cold classic of the genre. It has it all. Flawed characters, intense story telling, compelling plots told through interspersed narratives so that the reader gets a rounded tale, suspense, cliffhanger chapters, sex scenes -and oh my god I had forgotten how good this lady writes a sex scene, I mean DAMN!!!!!! *One cold shower later...* BUT I DIGRESS. What hinges the entire novel and which I, as a hearing impaired person would love to hugely applaud, is Karen's portrayal of deaf/hearing impaired characters. She places them front and center of the plot, the entire story arc revolves around 14 year old Michael who is hearing impaired and his brother, 5 year old Joseph. Escaping from an abusive and brutal home, Michael accidentally witnesses his step father being murdered by a mountainous bald man. No great loss to the world-seriously, this man was the worst type of human-but when his mother starts taking it out on him for his step father's disappearance, and his bruises are noticed by Joe's baseball coach, the amazing Diesel Kennedy, things take a turn for the worse. Diesel, is a dead ringer for the man he saw killing his step father. Terrified that he and his brother will be split up, Michael and Joe have to learn to trust that not all adults who enter their life will bring them physical and emotional pain-step forward Dr Dani Novak, hearing impaired physician, with a deaf brother, who have a genetic disorder called Waardenburg Syndrome, which in her foreward, Karen reveals is carried by herself and through her family. Dani and Diesel have skirted around each other for almost 2 years, for reasons I am not going to spoil here, both are scared to let go and give in to their feelings but this situation is too close to home and they have to band together to protect these little boys. Meanwhile, the killer, Cade Kaiser, is on a mission to fight back against those who steal, corrupt and even traffic children and young people to the highest bidder in exclusive poker games. And guess whose step-father had been attending the latest one... On top of this, you have Grant Masterson, whose brother, undecover cop Wesley, has gone missing. Their younger sister, Laurel had vanished from medical school the year before, and with the trail going cold, both Grant and Wes are estranged and at their wits end. But when Grant investigates, he finds his brother was living a lifestyle that no cop could ever afford, there are guns in his safe, bricks of heroin and an unfeasibly huge amount of money. Oh, and a book of names written in , some of them recognisable, and some of them crossed out... AND THEN there is the small matter of 7 dismembered bodies being dragged out of the local river, some with signs of being tortured prior to them being killed. Who was responsible and why? Still with me? This is exactly what I mean when I get a ranting head on and shout loudly about books derided as popular fiction or chick-lit as writers like Karen Rose are. Popularity apparently means pandering to the lowest common denominator, 'dumbing down' to some factions, however, what I have described barely scratches the surface of this plot which had me biting my nails, screaming at characters to get a bloody move on, crying, falling down a rabbit hole to try and understand the various medical conditions mentioned and so forth. Let me tell you, it is incredibly hard to wring such emotions out of a reader without having pure, honest to goodness talent. 'Into The Dark' is a work by a writer who knows exactly what she is doing because she is a master craftsman, and every page is stamped with her unique take on societal issues and prejudice. She raises issues such as victim shaming without being preachy, she holds people to account for their actions and doesn't paint in broad strokes, she has given nuances and subtlety to all her main characters. The way that other characters throughout Karen's Cincinatti universe, are woven through the story with potted histories, makes you want to dive into her other novels. She is absolutely superb at what she does , there is a reason that she is a multi-million selling author, and this book, for me, is peak Rose. Gripping, moving, emotive and passionate, 'Into The Dark' is a great read to treat yourself to as an early Christmas present,to put on your Christmas list (if you've been good!) or to give to a thriller loving friend. If you can bear to part with it! And ho boy, that Diesel...who couldn't fall for a man who knits to relieve stress? This is , I think, the first time I have read a book where a man has been knitting and I am so here for it ! Can you tell that I loved it?

Into the Dark is a book that is full of heartbreaking, heart-pounding and heartwarming moments. A compelling mystery that goes into interesting directions. It's finally Dani and Diesel Time !! This book has been long-awaited as we have seen Diesel pine for Dani in the previous Cincinnati books, and we all know that they would be perfect together. One of my favourite elements of Karen Roses books is that she highlights different issues. This book focuses on a deaf victim and shines spotlight things that we don't think about. Example our having to have a translator for personal or legal conversation. Or having alarms that light up as you wouldn't hear the noise of an alarm. Regarding the case, there two different stands going along Micheal, Dani and Diesel story. It was interesting to see how they were connected and how they were weaved into the story. Another favourite element of Into the dark is that Dani and Diesel aren't perfect they make mistakes, and they have their own issues. But they try their best to do the right thing and to help people. Karen Rose is the master of creating addictive reads. I read Into the dark in one day as I was so engrossed. I happily put on my headphones, so I could ignore the rest of the world and dive into Dani and Diesel story. Also, the Cincinnati gang for me will be now known as the marshmallow gang. Shout out to the Marvel character name for the dogs. Especially that Dani dogs is called Hawkeye. Into the Dark is perfect for crime fans that like romance with there mystery, and a story that pulls on your heartstrings. My Rating for Into the Dark is 5 out of 5.

I started the series with the first Cincinnati book, with Faith and Deacon.  It was actually #16 overall. Then I went back and read the previous 15 books. Into the Dark takes us back to Cincinnati, where we see many old friends from the other Cincinnati books. There is always a mystery, and in each book there is a new couple. Someone is usually in law enforcement. Besides the layers of the mystery and romance, is the character development which is part of the new relationship.  All of this makes for an engrossing, suspenseful read with plenty of action. Dani is a doctor, sister to Deacon, who had a bad experience in a previous relationship which left her HIV positive.  She doesn't believe she can have a good relationship. Diesel was abused as a child and has an injury from his military service. Both of them lost their parents during their teen years. Diesel works in IT investigations at the Ledger (newspaper).  While neither of them are in law enforcement, many of their friends and family are. The mystery centers on several murders starting with a stepfather who is abusing his sons. The theme of child abuse and human trafficking is a difficult and heart-breaking aspect here. I do love how hard Dani and Diesel and their amazing peer group works to protect and support those who have been abused and / or are in danger. The suspense and action kept me on edge.  The children broke my heart.  The compassion of this character group I know and love was incredible.  I shed tears more than once. Every book is great; I highly recommend them. I would start in order or at least within a city. These are long books; each one is about double a regular book in length.  There are connections between all the books because of the law enforcement aspects or family connections.  I love the circle of friends who support each other, and seeing them briefly in future books to get updates on their lives.

Into the Dark by Karen Rose was exactly what I expect from her Cincinnati series and I loved it. First, I must say that her inclusion of deaf characters was amazing. As someone who is mostly deaf in one ear, I love to read about characters who have similar struggles and still maintain active, happy lives. The BAHA that Dani wears was an option offered to me by my ENT a year ago! Now, I have to say that Into The Dark is pretty much one long trigger. The BAHA that Dani wears was an option offered to me by my ENT a year ago! Now, I have to say that Into The Dark is pretty much one long trigger. There is child molestation discussed throughout the book as several characters have dealt with it and the plot of the story is focused around it. So it's difficult to say I loved this book because the content is so heartbreaking. However, Rose writes such wonderful characters and terrifying plots that I was hooked from page one. Dani and Diesel have such awful backstories. These two have had more trauma than any person should have to bear. Diesel's devotion to Dani for over a year before she gives him a chance was so endearing. You can't help but adore Diesel! Add in how wonderful he is with Joshua and Michael and you are a goner (and so is Dani)! If you are able to read stories about horrible human tragedies like child abuse and human trafficking, I encourage you to read Karen Rose's Cincinnati series! She handles the delicate topics by showing the reader the effects in the immediate aftermath and the long term. The focus is on the people who survive these abhorrent crimes and how they rebuild their lives. In that sense, you get a hopeful look into the possibilities for those who are survivors and that is what I loved about the stories. Into the Dark shows you all sides of the puzzle: the cop looking for a missing sister, the children rescued from an abusive home, and a vigilante who wants to kill the people involved in trafficking. Into the Dark will take you on a journey that is at times painful, at times endearing, yet always hopeful despite the challenges of each person. Rose's books will always be "must buys" for me because of her writing style and her gripping characters.     POV: 3rd   Tears: yes   Trope: serial killer, dysfunctional family, police   Triggers: (view spoiler)[Lots of child abuse is mentioned-physical, verbal, and sexual (hide spoiler)]   Series/Standalone: stand alone within an interconnected series (lots of character overlap but it won't affect your ability to understand and enjoy Into the Dark   Cliffhanger: (view spoiler)[no (hide spoiler)]   HEA: (view spoiler)[Yes with with a super sweet epilogue (hide spoiler)] Other gritty romantic suspense series/books like Cold Justice by Toni Anderson, Don't Breathe a Word by Christie Craig, Pretend You're Safe by Alexandra Ivy...then you will probably like Into the Dark!   Into the Dark See full review on The Book Disciple

Michael has only one concern - keeping his brother Joshua safe. The only way to do that is making sure they stay together, and their step-father away from him. When he stumbles upon said step-father preparing to put his brother in danger certain events are set in motion that will change their lives forever. I have to say kudos to the author for writing the story in such a careful, thoughtful and emotive way. Part of me wishes, and I can imagine other readers and perhaps even the author, that Michael has only one concern - keeping his brother Joshua safe. The only way to do that is making sure they stay together, and their step-father away from him. When he stumbles upon said step-father preparing to put his brother in danger certain events are set in motion that will change their lives forever. I have to say kudos to the author for writing the story in such a careful, thoughtful and emotive way. Part of me wishes, and I can imagine other readers and perhaps even the author, that victims of abuse were always treated with such sincerity and genuine concern. The truth is that the systems that are put in place to keep children safe are often inadequate and overburdened. The vulnerable fall through the loopholes of the systems, and even when the abuse is recognised and acted upon what comes afterwards is only as good as the system that put the procedures in place. Also the sensitivity with which Rose approaches both the abuse, the deaf child and the hearing impaired is exceptionally well done. When you take all of the above and add crime to the plot, whilst simultaneously throwing in a serial killer who leaves body parts all over the place, it creates this spectacularly emotionally raw and charged read. Then as if crime and abuse weren't enough to keep the reader captivated the author adds romance to the picture, and where the abuse is concerned I don't mean captivated in a salacious way but rather in an emotionally involved way. Usually this often leads to a less is more or too many cooks scenario, but Rose balances every part of the story so well - it's as if it was meant to be. It's romantic suspense, an uncompromisingly direct and honest read with a great set of characters and highly sensitive topics. *I received a courtesy copy*

I have been waiting a long time for this couple to get their story...and boy it did not disappoint. What a wild ride...I could not put this book down. Karen Rose is one of my top 5 authors and I really love her books!!! The cast of characters in this book are awesome!!!! A couple of new arrivals, a lot of friends turned family, some evil, most good, but all of them will suck you right into their world.
