Read through this in one evening. Great quotes and each chapter has a few pages of story from Steinem’s life and experiences. I am a big fan of the illustrator as well. It added to the enjoyment of the book. Would recommend for fans of the author, feminism and quotes.

This book is comprised of essays and illustrations of Gloria Steinem’s (and some friends) most inspirational and outrageous quotes. She’s chosen the ones that will be useful in arguments, comforting in bad times, the most inspirational and ones most likely to make you laugh. If you aren’t familiar with her work this is a great introduction. The artwork is wonderful too. This would be a fantastic book to gift this holiday season.

First of all I love the cover, and the illustrations are beautiful! I want so many of them hanging on my walls! I love this book. I think there are some lovely quotes and I didn’t think it was too heavy or overdone. There are some great discussion points and I agree with the majority of them. I love that Gloria discusses the inherent racism that is so often in feminism, and that it doesn’t always completely represent everyone that it should. Gloria Steinem is an icon, so lots of things that she's said over the years have been re-quoted over and over. In this book Steinem collects some of her most famous quotes on several different topics. The book is divided into 6 chapters - Families Born and Chosen, Changing Aging, Work is Not a Four-Letter Word, Among Co-conspirators and Adversaries, Laughing Our Way to the Revolution, and In the Street. The last page of each chapter has quotes from other feminist women that pertain to that chapter's topic. This is a short, quick read that you could probably read in one sitting. Steinem is always inspiring and this book is a collection of all her inspiring highlights. Overall, a great feminist book! As this is a book of quotes, of course there were several that I loved: "For instance, in Sex and World Peace, Valerie Hudson and other scholars conducted a study of violence in a hundred nations around the world. The single biggest determinant of whether a nation would be violent, both in its own streets and in military violence against another country, was domestic violence in the home. More than poverty, access to natural resources, religion, or even degree of democracy, they found that violence against females was the indicator and normalizer of all other violence." (p. 9) "Democracy begins with owning our bodies. By that measure, women have rarely lived in a democracy." (p. 23) "Women are not going to be equal outside the home until men are equal inside it." (p. 32) "We are all engaged in the task of peeling off the false selves, the programmed selves, the selves created by our families, our cultures, our religions." - Anais Nin (p. 53) "Prostitution isn't the oldest profession, it's the oldest oppression." (p. 67) "Not one study has proved that women talk more than men, but numerous studies indicate that men talk more than women. Women are thought to be more talkative than men because they are being measured against the expectation of female silence." (p. 95) "The first resistance to social change is to say: It's not necessary." (p. 99) "A woman who aspires to be something will be called a bitch." (p. 109) "So use laughter as a guide: - Try to stay away from places where you're not allowed to laugh, including religious ones. The absence of laughter is a giveaway that the religion in question is more political than spiritual, more about a hierarchy with God at the top than about godliness in all living things. - Try to stay away from workplaces where laughter is absent. The degree of freedom where you work is indicated by the presence or absence of laughter. - Try to stay away from social settings with no laughter. Your ability to laugh is a sign that you're doing the right thing with the right people in the right place. Laughing together creates instant community." (p. 122-23)

This was a healing experience to read. It was awesome to have an overview of her work. I was able to read about her as a person instead of a historical figure, it was nice. I enjoyed the "my quotes" and "quotes I loved" section of the book. The illustrations were beautiful.

My Thoughts: Whenever I read a book by Gloria Steinem, I feel inspired, motivated, but even more, I feel understood. My first knowledge of her came when I was in college, and by then, I had already been exposed to other Second Wave Feminists, like Betty Friedan, but what Gloria brought to us was a sense of belonging, of being heard, and of connecting. We enjoyed talking circles like our consciousness-raising groups and the process of listening and speaking out. We were finding our voices for perhaps the first times in our lives. I always recommend Steinem’s work, but this book is more than a series of essays or thoughts: the quotes are also cleverly illustrated in such a way to make the reader smile. 5 stars.

Notable lines: “They know that our ability to make this very decision-whether to have children or not-is the biggest determinant of whether we are healthy or not, educated or not, employed outside the home or not, and how long we live. Even for women who have some role in public life, the patriarchal family often remains the microcosm of an authoritarian state.” “But as I approached my eighties, the word still entered my life: ‘Are you still traveling? Are you still writing?’ Beware of the stills. This was such a delightful book. It featured essays and quotes from Gloria Steinem, encompassing her life as an advocate. In her introduction, she says that the quotes she chose can provide more robust justification when you are faced with a challenge, and she is right. This curated collection of wisdom will make any person stronger, wiser, more informed and more prepared to join in the good fight.

A book with short essays followed by quotes by the author and her friends. I feared I'd dislike it after reading her disjointed introduction. But I enjoyed the book, the quotes, and marveled that Steinem created such diverse ideas. Some of the quotes resonated. Others infuriated. But mostly they made me think.

Excellent, quick read of quotes and short insights into activism, our society and women empowerment. Buying for at least one of my nieces. A good quickie to get you fired up! My favorite quote “One day, an army of gray-haired women may quietly take over the earth”. That makes my heart warm with the hope that peace, equality and tranquility could be realized. #powertotheladies

The Readers Digest of Gloria Steinem. An hour and a half read from cover to cover. I enjoyed the text more than the quotes. Quotes are good at distilling complex ideas to engage people, but I don’t remember them. Perhaps they are too close to advertising for me. I find political cartoons and longer story formats more memorable.

Gloria Steinem lends her passion to the reader as she takes you through her curated journey of bite-size wisdom. “The Truth Will Set You Free, But First It Will Piss You Off!” does just that; it liberates your mind and shakes off the dust of your pre-conceived notions of equality and stirs up emotion and desire for positive change and impact on your world and the world at large.

Regret not having read any of Gloria's work before - especially since she's been at the office so many times. A lot of helpful and uplifting words of wisdom. Parts re: racism could be updated. A lot of fun! Will catch up on my feminist reading!!!

The book has some good quotes but I felt like it was missing one defining message or any deeper meaning. It really didn't flow very well. I wasn't familiar with many of the friends that she quotes so much of the sentiment probably went right over my head.
